Hobbs & Shaw : Movie latest iteration of the Fast and Furious franchise is unexpectedly fun, spinning off characters played by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham from the seventh and eighth films.

It gives us a fair bit of gonzo action, a hair-raising London chase scene, some transatlantic alpha-male squabbling, a cheerfully silly plot MacGuffin – and for the first two thirds the whole thing hums like a hi-tech top. The movie is a bit overextended, and the action runs out of steam in the final battle, but it delivers some bangs and laughs for your buck.

You’ve got to appreciate a movie that doesn’t take itself seriously. And, man, “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” is definitely about as ridiculous as a movie can be, for better or worse.

There is no confusing exactly what this film thinks of itself within the first few moments, like when Idris Elba’s Brixon introduces himself as, “I’m the bad guy.” He doesn’t really need a name because, as with most villains in your average action movie, he’s just the guy you’re supposed to hate right away. So why waste time with formalities — or character development, for that matter?

Rotten Tomatoes : Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

When we meet the brawny tough guy, he’s in the midst of cracking heads and tearing apart limbs because he desperately needs a virus to annihilate the planet by a certain deadline — classic action movie bad guy ambition. You’re probably asking, but wouldn’t that mean he would die too? Nope, because this villain is mechanically enhanced. So he’s, like, part human but mostly robot.

The mountainous Johnson plays a tough federal agent who likes philosophy, reads Nietzsche, is called Hobbs and has a CIA handler called Lock! (I assume Lock’s name is spelt without an E or the gag wouldn’t be consistent with Hobbs, but it isn’t easy to tell because Lock, played by Ryan Reynolds, appears to be uncredited.) Hobbs is unwillingly teamed up with his old frenemy Shaw (Statham) and together they have to take down Brixton, a bionic cyborg played by Idris Elba.

Released on 1 August in the UK and Australia, and 2 August in the US.

Another of the most tangible connections to previous Fast & Furious movies comes in the form of Helen Mirren, who plays Deckard’s mother Queenie. Mirren made an uncredited cameo appearance in The Fate of the Furious as Magdalene Shaw, and is slated to appear in Fast & Furious 9, while she also references her other son, Owen, who appeared in Fast & Furious 6 and who was the major factor in Deckard’s rivalry with Hobbs and the rest of the Fast family.

Ultimately, if you have time to spare and are feeling committed to the Fast & Furious franchise, then it would be worth watching Fast & Furious 7 and The Fate of the Furious before seeing Hobbs & Shaw, but it’s certainly not necessary to do so and not having seen any previous Fast & Furious movies won’t stop you from understanding (and hopefully enjoying) this one.
